What does a student learn in ?

Missouri sets its own Learning Standards for English, math, science, and social studies, written by Missouri teachers and revised on a rolling cycle. The standards aim to be clear enough that a parent can read them and see what a child should know by the end of each grade. High school works on a different rhythm than the elementary grades. Instead of one big spring test, students sit for end-of-course exams as they finish key classes.

The shape of K-12
A plain-language read of how the state runs school.
What students learn
In elementary and middle school, English and math follow grade-by-grade standards that build reading, writing, and problem-solving steadily from kindergarten through eighth grade. Science is taught as something students figure out by doing, with hands-on investigations rather than a textbook march through facts. High school shifts into specific courses with their own finish lines, including Algebra I, English II, Biology, and Government. Social studies runs from local Missouri history in the early grades up to a full year of American government before graduation.
How students are measured
From third through eighth grade, students take the MAP Grade-Level Assessment in English and math each spring, with science added in fifth and eighth. In high school, the testing moves to end-of-course exams that students must complete before graduation in Algebra I, English II, Biology, and Government. A small group of students with significant cognitive disabilities take the MAP-Alternate instead. Every other year, a sample of fourth, eighth, and twelfth graders also sit for NAEP, the federal test used to compare states.

Common questions
  • Does this state use Common Core?

No. The state pulled out of Common Core and wrote its own standards for English, math, science, and social studies. The current standards were written by Missouri teachers and reviewed by parents, with periodic updates rather than a fixed revision cycle.

  • What is the MAP test, and who takes it?

MAP stands for the Missouri Assessment Program. Students in grades 3 through 8 take MAP Grade-Level tests in English and math each spring, and grades 5 and 8 also take a science test. High schoolers take end-of-course exams after finishing certain classes.

  • Which end-of-course exams do students need to graduate?

Districts must give end-of-course exams in Algebra I, English II, Biology, and Government before a student graduates. Students take each exam when they finish the matching course, which can happen anywhere from 8th grade through senior year.

  • What subjects are covered by the state standards?

The state sets standards in English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Districts decide how to teach other subjects such as the arts, world languages, and physical education, using local curriculum choices.

  • Where can I see what students are expected to learn this year?

Each grade level on this page lists the specific skills students are expected to learn in English, math, science, and social studies. Pick a grade to see the standards and example skills behind each one.
